Trash the Dress

As I have mentioned before, I love the whole trash the dress concept. I have been married for a little while, and my dress is still hanging in my closet collecting dust. I would much rather have photo's of my groom and I trashing the dress.

This is why they say you should go ahead and trash your dress:

Go ahead, you know you want to. Trash it. Get it dirty. Get it wet. Roll around in the mud. Drench it in the ocean. Totally trash it.

Why? … Why not? You’ve made a commitment to your husband. He’s your one and only true love, right? Then you’ll never need the dress again. And no, your daughter won’t wear it in 20-30 years. So you have two choices:

1) Suffocate it in plastic and throw it in a closet
2) Show your husband how committed you are by trashing the dress, and get some great fun pictures while you do it!

Trash the dress just had a photo shoot in the OC. The pictures should be up soon, but go check out the others. They are very fun and sexy.

Parachute Wedding Dress at Smithsonian

Every wedding has it's own flavor, theme, memories, meanings and so on. Trying to find the right theme and tie in special meanings for the most precious memories is something every bride thinks (and gets stressed) about beforehand.

I'm not sure this example would be acceptable today, but if it was the dress design would definitely be different.

Parachuteweddingdress

This 1940s dress was made from the parachute that saved the grooms life in WWII. The groom's plane caught fire returning home from a bombing raid and the crew bailed out. He landed and slept wrapped in his parachute for the night until he could be rescued. He then returned home with this parachute and used it to propose to his wife. She then made it into her wedding gown.

Princess Brides from Disney

Disney, the king of princesses for the 20th century, is adding princess bridal gowns to it's wedding line, which already includes weddings at it's resorts and on it's cruise line.

"We do 'being a princess' better than anyone," Korri McFann, marketing manager for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons, said in an interview.

The gowns were inspired by Disney princesses in Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid and all the dresses have a classic/modern appeal using the latest fabrics and cuts.

Kelly's gowns, which debuted on a New York catwalk on Sunday, range in price from $1,500 to $3,000, below couture prices but above the average wedding dress price of $1,000. The price point is aimed at a generation of couples who are getting married older and paying for their own celebrations, Disney said.

Stolen Wedding Dresses Found

Last November trucks filled with wedding dresses donated to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation were stolen out of a hotel parking lot in Scottsdale, Arizona. Last week they were found when they turned a truck and trailer around for lack of enough documentation. More investigation turned up the missing gowns.

Read the rest of the story

The Making Memories Brides for Breast Cancer Foundation travels the nation doing gown sales with donated dresses and then uses the money raised to provide breast cancer patients with money to attain their wishes.

Brides Club has participated a couple of times in the Seattle, Washington area and there are so many others that have participated large and small across the nation to make this a huge success.

Coverage on Oprah Winfrey Show, MSNBC, Ananda Lewis and over 100 television interviews, the organization has received nearly 12,000 gown donations with an estimated resale value of over 3 million dollars.

Hawaiian Wedding Dresses

In 1947 a resolution was passed that encouraged Honolulu City & County employees to wear Hawaiian shirts from early June to late October to beat the heat of Hawaiian summers.  Soon, Friday became known as “Aloha Friday” in Hawaii where everyone would wear a favorite Hawaiian dress or Hawaiian shirt to express their “Aloha Spirit”.  Today, you’ll see an assortment of Hawaiian or Aloha shirts worn as everyday wear as well as for a variety of special occasions. Hawaiian themed weddings, graduations and birthday parties have become very popular not only in Hawaii but also on the mainland!  Many times these special occasions call for family members to wear matching attire to signify their unity and share in the aloha spirit within us!

Many of our loyal customers have asked us to create wedding dresses similar to their favorite Hawaiian Moon styles.  These requests have encouraged Hawaiian Moon to introduce two styles.  Our gowns are made especially to fit each individual bride and are not sold off the rack.  Fittings are done at our corporate office by appointment only.

Ivory Wedding Dress - The Forgotten Color

Jim_hjelm_ivory_wedding_dressDahlia mentioned today that ivory is a forgotten wedding dress color, but I disagree. Actually many more gowns are being made in ivory and photographers are suggesting that ivory dresses actually appear better in pictures because the contrast is not as strong as white.

However, I believe that the color of your wedding dress needs to reflect you, the mood of your event, and the memories you'd like to preserve.

Find local bridal shops.

Buying the Perfect Wedding Dress

Before you start your gown search it's wise to have a budget already in place, so you don’t overspend on your dress. Have a price in mind that includes your wedding dress, headpiece or tiara, slip, shoes, undergarments and bridal jewelry. Visit several established shops, and you'll quickly get a feeling about service and organization. Is the staff helpful?

Be sure to take into consideration your size and weight. Short women often look best in close fitting dresses with less decoration. When you walk down the aisle, you want the crowd to say “What a beautiful bride.” So wear what makes YOU look your very best. It is the most expensive dress you will ever buy and so smart shopping is important.

If you are big busted, take your bustier with you. Trying on dresses is very time consuming so bringing the right bra saves you time. The final bustier or bra is determined by the style of the dress so you may want to purchase it after the dress is decided upon.

The final length of your wedding gown can only be determined by wearing the right heel size. Before you walk out to look in the mirror, slip on heels. The look & flow when you walk is greatly affected by the right shoes and the right slip.

Look for a dress that best compliments your complexion and eye color [see our blog: Eye Makeup 101]. There are many shades. Just because it is a popular color, doesn’t mean it is right for you. A general rule would be that if fall and spring colors (Peach, Olive Green, Rust and Turquoise) look good on you, then gowns with yellow in them would be a good choice such as Beige or Gold. If summer and winter colors like Purple, Sky Blue, Cranberry and Lavender are good colors for you then you may want to try Ivory and stark White dresses. You can experiment with colors. Suddenly your friend or mother will say “THAT IS THE ONE.”

The back of your gown is also very important. Keep in mind that during the ceremony you will have your back to your guests. Be sure to look at the back of the gown in the mirror. If you have a train on your dress, you will have to bustle it up before leaving the church or chapel. An option would be a dress with a removable train.

It's important to ask about the bridal shops pricing for alterations, repairs, final fittings, pressings and cancellations. If you plan on dieting, start it early in your engagement because alterations can be costly. Try to get as perfect a fit as you can. You may want to order it a size or two smaller, if you are already loosing weight.

Your bridal dress contract should indicate the manufacturer, style number, size of gown and any additional charges; namely alterations or pressings. Double check to be sure the contract has the exact choice of style and size. Be sure the delivery date is listed and that it allows time for fittings before the wedding date. Waiting time for ordered gowns, depending on the manufacturer, can be up to six (6) months. If you find a gown that fits perfectly but don’t like the color or décor, try on another gown from the same manufacturer in that size. The fit should be similar.

Our hope is that purchasing the right wedding gown for your special day will be a unique and unforgettable experience and something you will always cherish.

Find your perfect wedding dress.

Destination Weddings are extremely hot right now and picking the right wedding dress for a destination wedding is different. Keep in mind the need to travel with your dress, cleaning and pressing your wedding dress upon arrival, and being able to fit into it after traveling to your destination.

5 Fun Wedding Trends for 2006

In addition to the Top 10 Wedding Trends we talked about in March, we have found 5 more wedding trends that may interest you:

COLORS. While many colors will be popular this year, purple will prevail.  TheKnot.com foresees a palette from pale lavender to deep eggplant, used in a variety of patterns on everything from bridesmaids' dresses and invitations to the wedding cake and cocktail napkins. Seasonal hues, according to The Wedding Company, include black, plum and navy (winter), latte, coral and lavender (spring), mauve, sage and turquoise (summer), and emerald, burgundy and chocolate (fall).

FLOWERS. While roses will forever symbolize love and romance, more adventurous brides are experimenting with orchids, gerbera daisies, peonies, gardenias, lilies and green hydrangeas.  Arrangements with a "just-picked, casual look" are favorites for both brides and their mothers, with silk flowers gaining speed as more durable, yet equally colorful, options.

RINGS. Gold is gorgeous, diamonds are to die for, and platinum is a perennial favorite, but the hot new metal in men's wedding bands is tungsten.  Over the past two years, tungsten has "taken on a life of its own," according to Steve Blackwell of e-Weddingbands.com, a premier online wedding band retailer. "It's the only metal that is scratch-resistant, making it very appealing to men who may have shied away from softer metals in the past." Another trend noted by Blackwell: custom-engraving wedding bands, with personalized messages of loyalty ranging from "All my love" to "We Are . . . Penn State" (www.e-weddingbands.com).

ATTIRE. We can expect to see more and more strapless bridal gowns, as well as floor-length styles, adorned with pastel trimmings and embroidery, fancy beadwork and satin accents.  Experts also see a renaissance of the morning coat for grooms in both black and gray - a less formal alternative to the traditional tuxedo.

RECEPTION. Bridal Guide magazine notes unique menu fare ranging from one-bite desserts and chilled soups served in shot glasses to ethnic-inspired entrees and make-your-own food stations.  Long tables conducive for family-style serving will be decorated with colored stemware, gilt edging, and party favors that include ginger-flavored truffles and monogrammed chocolate bars. The event will rock this year - literally - with DJs spinning favorite tunes from the '80s or even spicy Latin samba music.

Themed Wedding Gowns

Many brides are choosing to have weddings that are less traditional, and is a reflection of the couples personalities. Theme weddings are a great way to do this. Whether you choose to get married dressed in period clothing, or dressed as your favorite famous couple (Elvis and ----), you should do it your way.

I came across a company that designs costumes for TV and movies that also makes wedding gowns. I thought it was a great idea, whether you want a traditional dress, or a elaborate costume they can do it. Check it out at Debbie's Creative Costumes.

Princess Diana's Wedding Dress in Ohio

Starting Saturday, Ohioans will be able to see what many believe is "the most famous wedding dress in the world.”

It is the wedding gown that was worn by Princess Diana when she married Prince Charles in 1981.

The dress is one of 150 personal and private items that belonged to the late princess that will soon be on display at the Dayton Art Institute.

“Everyone will be able to see what she meant to everybody,” said Nick Grossmark of the Dayton Art Institute.

The exhibit is on loan from the Althorp Estate, Diana's childhood home and her final resting place.

The Dayton show marks the final U.S. engagement for the exhibition.

The show runs through June 11th.

More information about the Princess Diana items that are being auctioned off on March 31.

Bride Looses $2400 Buying eBay Wedding Dress

Moniquelhuillier How many times does this have to happen? It is so unfortunate for this to happen once, but there are signs that things may not be legit.

This bride has great taste in the Monique Lhuillier line, but read this great article on how to avoid scams online.

Vera Wang on the Runway

New York Magazine captured great shots of Vera Wang's new line at this weeks New York Fashion Week.

(NEW YORK) Vera Wang employed color-blocking and expressionist details in her collection this season, inspired by painter Mark Rothko.

“This was my favorite show of the week. It was all the things I liked about last season—all the flouncy layers and satiny fabrics, but reined in and more feminine. It was beautiful”
Cindi Leive, Glamour

“Vera rocked. It was so intellectual. I wanted to have all of it. Translating the Rothko-inspired elements into her pieces. The romanticism—the little frills and lace and rosettes and empire waist and drop waist. There was so much to choose from.”
Roopal Patel, Bergdorf Goodman

"I wore Vera to the 2003 Academy Awards and it was the most fun thing I have ever worn. She's the kind of designer who is always of the moment. I don't think there is anyway to describe her collection in one sentence. I loved the moodiness. It is feminine yet very intelligent."
Holly Hunter

Last month Vera Wang's first Lifestyle Boutique opened in Honolulu, Hawaii.
